Today 1 september 2026 applications have opened for patient advocates and early-career researchers wishing to join the 2027 Open Academy x ERDERA Schools and build the skills needed to contribute meaningfully to rare disease research.. Organised by EURORDIS–Rare Diseases Europe through its Open Academy and supported by ERDERA, the European Rare Diseases Research Alliance, the Schools combine online learning with intensive face-to-face training. Participants follow sessions tailored to their chosen track while also learning together through activities designed to strengthen collaboration between patient advocates and researchers.
The Medicines Research & Development School focuses on the pathway from research to medicines, helping participants understand areas such as clinical development, ethics, regulatory processes and patient engagement. The Scientific Innovation & Translational Research School explores how scientific discoveries can be translated into impact for people living with a rare disease.
Open Academy training aims to give participants the knowledge, skills and confidence to contribute to research as informed partners. Graduates also join an international alumni network offering continued access to peer exchange, resources and further learning opportunities.
